Careers in Roofing
The roofing industry is full of a variety of career options - whether it's in manufacturing, design, sales, project management or working outside as an installer getting to deliver the finished product! Here's a peek at some of the jobs you could consider in roofing:
Sales Professional (Roofing Sales)
Role Summary:
Sales professionals guide homeowners, businesses, and contractors through roofing options. They conduct inspections, prepare estimates, explain material choices, and ensure a smooth customer experience from consultation to contract.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong communication and customer‑service skills
- Ability to explain roofing products and systems in simple terms
- Estimating or measuring skills; CRM experience helpful
- Training in product knowledge (provided by many employers)
Roofing Inspector
Role Summary:
Roofing inspectors assess the condition and performance of residential, commercial, or industrial roofs. They identify damage, structural issues, ventilation problems, and safety concerns, and provide documentation for repair plans or insurance claims.
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of roofing systems, materials, and building codes
- Ability to identify defects and safety hazards
- Training or certification (e.g., HAAG, NRCA, or state licensing where required)
- Strong attention to detail and report‑writing skills
Roofing Designer
Role Summary:
Roofing designers develop roof layouts, determine slopes and drainage, select materials, and prepare technical drawings. They balance aesthetics, function, and structural requirements for both new construction and renovation projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Proficiency in CAD software or design platforms
- Understanding of roofing assemblies, building codes, and load requirements

Chemical Engineer (Roofing Materials)
Role Summary:
Chemical engineers in roofing develop and improve materials such as shingles, membranes, coatings, adhesives, and insulation. They test durability, energy efficiency, weather resistance, and environmental performance.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science
- Knowledge of polymers, adhesives, composites, and manufacturing processes
- Experience with lab testing and quality control procedures
- Strong analytical and research skills
Research & Development (R&D) Specialist
Role Summary:
R&D specialists innovate new roofing materials and technologies. They evaluate product performance, develop sustainability improvements, collaborate with manufacturers, and support testing for certifications and standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Background in engineering, materials science, chemistry, or related fields
- Experience with product testing and data analysis
- Knowledge of industry standards (ASTM, UL, FM, etc.)
- Creative problem‑solving and experimentation mindset
Project Manager
Role Summary:
Roofing project managers coordinate all phases of installation or repair projects. They manage teams, scheduling, budgeting, material procurement, safety practices, and customer communication to ensure successful project completion.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in construction or roofing operations
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Understanding of safety regulations and jobsite practices
- Preferred certifications: PMP, OSHA 30, or NRCA training
