March begins Women’s History Month, and the Northern NJ Council rang in the month-long celebration of women in their virtual meeting held on February 25, 2021.

Council board member Maggie Nyk (PB Roofing) shared the history of International Women’s Day and the impact this day has had on her since her childhood celebrations in Poland.

Wendy Lucas (PB Roofing) shared milestones of prominent women who have shattered the glass ceiling in the national arena. Then she led the group through “her story”, an inspirational tribute to the strong women in her family whose hard work and tenacity forged a path for her personally, and who by example represents the opportunity created by prior generations for working moms today. The group then broke out into “zoom rooms” to share their own stories of inspiration.

In support of International Women’s Day the council has created two “calls to action”.

  1. “Choose to Challenge” the global theme of IWD this year. Templates were provided to members to help prepare and post their own “Choose To Challenge” posts. PB Roofing also shared their corporate challenge video.
  2.  LinkedIn Celebration Story. Council Chair Lynn Picone asked the group to share their stories of gratitude and inspiration in a LinkedIn post on March 8th. As part of the campaign, those who post should use the hashtags referenced on examples provided to members and “like” colleagues posts.

In conclusion, board member Christine Mockeknhaupt reminded all to nominate inspirational Women for NWIR’s World Rising Star and World Veteran Awards, setting follow-up meetings to support nominations.  Council Vice-Chair Erica Sherman acted as “producer” guiding the remote group through the entire session.

Next month’s meeting is scheduled for March 18th and will focus on mindful meditation and the importance of wellness.
