Have you heard of She Builds?

Have you heard of She Builds? Through the partnership of Rebuilding Together, She Builds is a power collaboration between neighbors and partners who provide critical repairs for women-headed households and women-focused community spaces to empower women to maintain safe and healthy homes. The women and men that volunteer for the women led She Build Teamwork to create a supportive community network to continue the advancement in training and opportunities.

Last year, due to the pandemic and the restrictions in place, Rebuilding Together South Sound and the Seattle Chapter of National Women in Roofing was unable to have their She Builds event. This year, however, the event is back on and scheduled for July 24th. We are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to be part of this year’s event and we have been assigned the home of Betty D. She is an 89-year-old, disabled woman and has owned her Tacoma residence for over 60 years!

We are so excited that GAF has graciously donated all the shingles and has even offered their new Roofing Academy space in Lakewood, WA for NWiR Members and volunteers to practice on mock-ups for those of us who are interested in being more hands-on this year. Chinook Roofing, Fields Roof Service, and SQI, Inc have put their resources together to cover the remaining materials, roof removal, and installation. We are also accepting in-kind donations or sponsorships for this project, so if you are unable to attend, this is a great way to be involved as well!

Regarding volunteers, while we are still having to adhere to the CDC’s Health and Safety Guidelines for in-person gatherings, we’ll have to carefully manage how many people at once we have onsite. Our hope is that by the time of the event the gathering restrictions will be loosened, and we can adjust accordingly. But, so we know who is interested in attending the event, please make sure you register!
