NWIR Canada – CLIMATE ADAPTATION OF COMMERCIAL ROOFS
May 26, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT
| FreeCLIMATE ADAPTATION OF COMMERCIAL ROOFS presented by Flonja Shyti, MASc.
The building code provides the minimum requirements for the design of roofs and it currently does not account for climate change, despite highlighting that Canada is warming at a higher rate than that of the global average. This presentation will concentrate on the efforts undertaken by the National Research Council on developing adaptation measurements to mitigate the impact of climate change on commercial roofs. Adaptation measurements for new construction will initially be presented. The different steps that can be taken to increase the resiliency of new roofs for wind and rain will be demonstrated through the application of the web-tool Climate-RCI and CSA A123.26 “Performance requirements for Climate Resilience of Low Slope Membrane Roofing Systems”. This presentation will also discuss the steps being taken to develop adaptation measurements for existing roofs in the form of code specifications for Alternations to Existing Roofs.
Flonja Shyti, MASc., is a research council officer with the Construction Research Centre of the National Research Council of Canada. As part of the roofing and insulation group, her research focuses on the performance requirements for climate resilience of commercial and residential roofs and their integration into codes. She is a member of SPRI and IIBEC and is registered with the Professional Engineers Ontario. She received her master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Ottawa.
