As a committee, we feel it’s important to emphasize that Black history is American history. We strive to honor Black Americans not just in February, but all year long with diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We’re excited to feature some amazing Black women in roofing along with notable Black Americans in history! We encourage all members to read their stories and embrace this month with the intention of learning and honoring their stories and accomplishments.

Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The Black History Month 2023 theme, “Black Resistance,” explores how “African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms, and police killings,” since the nation’s earliest days.

This is a call to everyone, inside and outside our organization, to study the history of Black Americans’ responses to establish safe spaces, where Black life can be sustained, fortified, and respected.
